Duration & Phases of Menopause

The Duration & Phases of Menopause

The world and life within it are constantly changing and, thus, the female body is not excluded. Similar to puberty or pregnancy, menopause is a process of physical and hormonal change. At this state, the fertile period of life is slowly coming to an end for a new stage to begin, and the duration of that stage, of menopause, depends on various factors. Usually, the stages of menopause commence over 10 to 15 years. During the first half of menopause, typical symptoms do occur but then subside over time.

The hormonal system during menopause transitions through several phases. Those phases are classified as pre-menopause, perimenopause and post-menopause.

Premenopause – is early onset menopause, when menopausal symptoms occur before they should. This occurs mainly because of hormonal imbalances but can also occur when the ovaries or uterus are removed.

Perimenopause – is the early stage before menopause sets in. For three to five years prior to menopause, when your hormones are transitioning, you will start to experience the typical symptoms of menopause: hot flashes, insomnia, night sweats, heart palpitations, mood swings and vaginal dryness.

Menopause – is the stage during the first year after perimenopause.

Postmenopause – is the stage reached after the first year of menopause. The symptoms will continue for some years during this phase.

When Does Menopause Begin?

The beginning of menopause typically begins during the period of mid-40’s and late 50’s. Often, the last period (menopause) occurs between the ages of 50 and 52. In some cases, menopause can occur as early as age 35 or as late as 55. It is entirely individual.

Menopause Duration & Region

The duration of menopause can vary significantly from woman to woman, but it is also evident that it changes among women regionally.

For example, Women’s Health Across the Nation found that women around the world experience symptoms of menopause for an average of 7.4 years while the average European recognized symptoms of hormonal changes a year less. And, in contrast, African women tend to experience menopausal symptoms much longer while Asian women reportedly experienced a significantly shorter menopause.

The Phase of Unknown

In societies where youth is a desired time of life, menopause can seem quite scary. This is the beginning of a new life stage which can also be considered exciting and beautiful. This is a time that marks wisdom and serenity.

Tip: Try not to dote on the typical symptoms that may occur. If you are searching for symptoms, they will likely appear. We recommend that you try to relax and enjoy the various stages you are about to embark on as much as you can. When symptoms do arise, you can appease them with natural home remedies.
